IE4 Efficiency
What is IE4 Regulation?
The IE4 Motor Directive is a regulation aimed at increasing the efficiency of electric motors that will come into force in the European Union on July 1, 2023. According to this regulation, all electric motors between 75 kW and 200 kW must have at least IE4 efficiency.
The IE4 motor regulation is a standard that evaluates the energy efficiency of electric motors. It is set by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) and defined in the IEC 60034-30 standard. IE4 stands for "Super Premium Efficiency" and indicates that electric motors have a very high level of energy efficiency.
IE4 motors are highly advanced and environmentally friendly motors in terms of energy efficiency. These motors can significantly reduce energy costs by operating with low energy consumption. They also contribute to environmental sustainability goals and help reduce the carbon footprint.
IE4 motor regulation covers large electric motors typically used in industrial applications. Due to their high efficiency and low energy loss, these motors are preferred for applications that require continuous operation. IE4 motors are identified as IE4 on motor nameplates and technical documentation, allowing users to recognize that the motor has high energy efficiency.
The IE4 Regulation Introduces Energy Efficiency and Innovation
Energy efficiency and IE4 regulation are important developments that make electric motors more efficient and environmentally friendly. Here are some of the innovations brought about by energy efficiency and IE4 regulation:
High efficiency: IE4 motors are more energy efficient than IE3 motors. This means less energy consumption and less energy loss. Motors generate less heat during operation, which means they convert energy more efficiently.
Advanced technology and design: IE4 motors are made more efficient through the use of advanced design and technology. This includes optimizing the materials, bearings, magnets, and other components used in the internal structure of the motors.
Inverter Compatible: IE4 motors can be designed as part of a structure that can operate in conjunction with variable-speed drives. This enables precise control of motor speed and torque and increases the potential for energy savings.
Electronic control and monitoring: IE4 motors can be equipped with advanced electronic control systems and remote monitoring capabilities. This makes it easy to monitor motor performance and anticipate maintenance needs.
Environmental friendliness: IE4 engines are considered more environmentally friendly because they consume less energy and have lower energy losses. Less energy consumption reduces greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to a more efficient use of natural resources.
Longer life: IE4 motors can be made to last longer by using higher-quality materials and design features. This can reduce maintenance costs.
Impact of IE4 Regulation on the Industry
Energy efficiency will increase. Electric motors are a major consumer of energy in industrial and commercial applications. More efficient IE4 motors will help reduce power consumption and carbon emissions. This will contribute to lower energy costs and reduced environmental impact.
Maintenance and repair costs will be reduced. IE4 motors have a longer lifetime than IE3 motors. This helps to reduce maintenance and repair costs.
Environmental noise pollution is reduced. IE4 motors will help reduce environmental noise.
New opportunities will arise in the electric motor market. The higher efficiency of IE4 motors has created new opportunities for electric motor manufacturers. These manufacturers have started to develop new technologies and build new production facilities to produce IE4 motors. IE4 motors will become a new standard in the electric motor market.
IE4 Environmental design requirements for electric motors
New Regulation (EU) 2019/1781 2. Energy Consumption in Turkey by Years and 5. Efficient Electric Motor Transition Efforts and Studies in Türkiye
In a world where energy resources are limited and environmental impacts are increasingly felt, it is necessary to minimize the environmental impact during industrial product design and production stages. Since electric motors account for a large proportion of energy consumption, reducing their environmental impact is critical in promoting energy savings and reducing the carbon footprint.
According to a 2010 study by the Committee of European Manufacturers of Electrical Machinery and Power Electronics (CEMEP), industrial applications account for 36.5% of electricity consumption.
According to the Turkish National Energy Plan of the Ministry of Energy, Türkiye energy consumption by sector is expected to increase from 34.4% in industry in 2020 to 38.7% in 2035.
CEMEP conducted a study to determine the market shares of IE class motors used in the European region in July 2022. The consumption rates of 0.75-375 kW 2-4 and 6 poles and efficiency classes IE1-IE2-IE3-IE4 of electric motors have been taken into account over the years. According to the results of the relevant study below, the efficiency class of electric motors at the end-user level has shown a great change in the past 7 years. With the increase in the unit cost of electricity, the replacement of motors with efficient motors has reduced the amount of energy consumed and reduced the loss and cost to the end user.
- In 2015, more than half of the engines were still in the IE2 class and the share of IE3 was 16%. Seven years later, in 2021, 70% of engines placed on the EU market will be IE3 engines.
- The transition from IE2 to IE3 has been steady due to the impact of this regulation. This is due to the high investments made by engine manufacturers in development and production.
- The option of IE3 or IE2 with VSD has been a great success, as VSD has become a topic of discussion among OEMs and end users with the potential to save up to 40% of electrical energy.
- The IE1 class is disappearing, driven by end-user demand for efficient motors and especially by market pressure. A certain percentage of these motors have survived because the regulation exempts some motors, such as brake motors or 8-pole motors.
Impact on industry and consumers
Industry Impacts:
Energy savings: IE4 motors can significantly reduce the energy consumption of industrial equipment. Thanks to their higher efficiency, companies can reduce their electrical energy costs. This makes companies more competitive.
Increased productivity: IE4 motors can provide higher productivity and less energy loss in production processes because they operate more efficiently. This can help companies produce more products and generate more profit with lower operating costs.
Environmentally friendly: IE4 motors are considered more environmentally friendly because they consume less energy and have lower energy losses. Businesses can contribute to environmental sustainability goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Cost savings: IE4 engines help companies reduce costs over the long term by using less energy and requiring less maintenance. Lower energy consumption and less maintenance can significantly reduce operating costs.
Consumer Impact:
Product quality: IE4 motors can contribute to higher-quality products. Especially when used in industrial products, higher quality products can be produced due to more precise speed and torque control.
Lower energy consumption: Consumers can use less energy by using products equipped with IE4 motors. This helps reduce energy bills in homes and commercial buildings.
Environmental benefits: The lower energy consumption of IE4 motors means less impact on the environment. By saving energy, consumers contribute to the conservation of natural resources and environmental sustainability.
Longer product life: Products with IE4 motors can be more durable and last longer. This provides consumers with less maintenance and longer life.
